Red Lenses - What can you use?

After a discussion with the folks over at Gates Underwater Products, I wanted to make sure that everyone understands the lens possibilities with the Deep Red Video Housing.

The fact is this: ANY lense that can be used on the Red One Camera can also be used with the Deep Red Video Housing. Gates has done the original design with the Red 18-50, simply because that is the most common lens.

If you have a lens that you would like supported, you will simply work directly with the folks at Gates to design a proper length extension. It is simply too cost prohibitive for Gates to purchase every lens on the market, just to design an extension for it.

Have questions about this? Check out our forum on this topic or contact us for details.

HD-SDI Out details

I wanted to pass on this information from Gates regarding HD-SDI out.

Gates Underwater Products has announced that surface feed video via HD-SDI is now available on certain Gates housings for high definition (HD) cameras that support this interface. Cameras currently providing HD-SDI output include the Sony EX1, Canon XL-H1, XL-H1s and RED One.

What is HD-SDI?

High Definition – Serial Digital Interface (HD-SDI) is commonly found in editing suites, connecting devices such as studio monitors, conversion boxes, recording drives, etc. It is a robust, high speed digital interface that not only transfers high quality uncompressed HD amongst these devices but does so with minimal or no data loss.
What are the benefits of HD-SDI for surface feed?

January 14th Deep Red Update

We are getting much closer to the Deep Red Video Housing, so as expected, we have started receiving more information.

The Housing price is $23,900.00 but will include quite a few items that we originally thought would have been extra.

The Gates Deep Red will ship standard with the following items:
Gates Deep Red Underwater Video Housing
Housing for Red 5.6" LCD
Tool Kit and O-Ring Kit
Gates Seal Check Unit
Pelican Case

The Acryilic Port and Extender for the Red 18-50 will be $1700.00. $1,100.00 for the port and $600.00 for the extender.

This Standard configuration will support the Red One Camera with Red 18-50 Lens. You will need the following items in order to use this housing: Red One camera, 5.6” Red LCD, Red Battery, Red Raid and Red 18-50 lens.

Deep Red Standard Features

We are just a little over two months away from the Gates Deep Red housing being available. As we get closer to the ship date, we will be keeping everyone up to date as much as possible.

Since DEMA, we have learned quite a bit about the housing and what to expect for features and accessories.

The housing is going to come standard with a monitor housing for the Red 5" LCD. The prototype of this housing was at DEMA and can be seen on a lot of the prototype photos. The housing uses magnetically operated controls to access the functions of the RED LCD. This allowed Gates to design the controls without having to penetrate the housing body.

The housing also will come standard with a zoom control motor which will allow very smooth control of the lens zoom. The motor was also installed on the inside of the prototype housing at DEMA.

Deep Red will have support for several different lenses. To accomodate these lenses, Gates has developed an adjustable gearing system in the housing. For the user, the process of setting up for a new lens will be quite simple and straight forward.

Gates has also developed a toggle control that will access the toggle control on the back of Red One. This was quite a challenge, but as always, Gates has come up with a very intuitive way of handling the complex control.

For those working on films or documentaries involving "talent", Gates has also incorporate a red tally light on the front/top of the housing. This allows the talent to know when you are actually recording.

Adjustable handles will be standard also, which will allow individual users the option of adjusting the handles to fit their preference and comfort.

As more information is released we will be sure to give more updates.
